On March 28, 2021, my father lost his battle with Early On-Set Alzheimer's. In 2006, we lost his mother, my Nana, to this disease as well. No one should have to watch their loved one go through this terminal disease; to care and watch them fade away from the people they once were to a shell you don't recognize. We said goodbye to him over and over again. Wondering each day if this was the last time we would do XY and Z with him. The process was never ending since we were officially diagnosed. The infinite circles knowing his body was decaying and shutting down inside and trying to preserve his dignity along the way. In the midst of the heartache, we always saw a small glimmer of light in those blue eyes. Alzheimer's couldn't take his sense of humor away, even though we didn't always understand what he was talking about, it didn't take away the importance of smiles and laughter, and the knowledge of what it truly means to experience unconditional love and acceptance. Alzheimer's didn't take away our last individual goodbyes with him. He made sure he told us each what he needed to say on his terms. Even if it was just a whisper.
Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease. Please make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
Thank you for joining the fight against Alzheimer's and honoring my Nana and Dad!
