Today I walk for the caregivers. These are the ones who put their own lives aside to take care of the ones they love. The day in and day out of caring for someone you love can be exhausting yet humbling. But we all know that it’s caregivers that make this all happen. The cooking, feeding, the cleaning, the errands, laundry, the agreeing to avoid an argument, the distracting to change the subject, the delaying to keep the peace and the many sleepless nights of worry. Pushing pause on their own personal, financial and career lives. Sometimes even sun-setting their own life dreams entirely. I pray that one day that there will be enough respite care to go around to prevent caregiver burnout, isolation, depression and even death before the Alzheimer’s patient. Because without caregivers, we all are helpless. They are the heart, lifeblood, central call station for the loved one who is suffering (and for the rest of the family), so we can continue on with our daily lives. I walk to raise awareness for many unpaid hours, selflessness of round the clock care they give...they truly are today’s superheros!
