Dear friends and family,
In only 2 years(2010 and 2012) I lost my two amazing grandmothers to Alzheimer's. Their losses were heartbreaking and hard. I am still mourning for their losses and I still remember their sweet faces and the love that they had in their hearts. But it was not only their losses that broke my heart. The last few years of their lives were very hard to witness too. Loss of memory, anxiety, not recognizing anybody around them, gradually loosing the capability to eat, physical weakness and everything else that comes with this monster turned their final days and years into the hardest and most uncomfortable times. Living that life was unimaginably hard for them and for us witnessing their painful journeys was devastating.
I do not know who will be the next victim of this disease, it can be anyone and again can be someone that I love and cherish a lot. What I know is that the pain of Alzheimer’s for those who have it and those who are around them is so deep and heartbreaking that I should do something about it. I need to know that I have done my share.
So this will be the 14th year that I am walking in the Washington DC annual Alzheimer’s Walk and collecting donations for the Alzheimer’s Association. In the last thirteen years I have collected more than $11,000 in donations. Last year was my record amount with more than $1,100. This would have not happened, unless for the generosity of those who felt my pain and saw the danger and decided they wanted to do something. Thank you all.
I appreciate your generosity in advance and wish for a day that we all can live without the fear of Alzheimer's disease.
Best,
Arash Azma
