WHY I WALK

My grandma, Phyllis Katawicz, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in August of 2007. Since then, I've been in a relentless fight against this debilitating disease alongside my family, friends, and the Alzheimer's Association. 

My Grandma Phyllis was the ultimate grandmother. She loved to spoil her grandkids with treats and goodies. She would read to me my favorite books over and over again. I’m sure she knew Thomas the Tank Engine front to back and back to front. She taught me how to ride a bike, running behind me making sure I wouldn’t fall. When I was born, she had had heart surgery three days earlier and wasn’t supposed to lift anything for weeks. But she said not even God could stop her from holding her grandson.

Alzheimer's started taking her away from me as a middle schooler. I wish I had more time with my Grandma. More time with her infinite love and her kind smile. Instead, I watched as Alzheimer's ripped my family apart and stole away that love and kindness from me, my family, and the rest of the world.

We have made incredible progress since 2007, though. Funding at the National Institutes of Health has quintupled to more than $3.7 billion and we've finally entered the era of disease-altering treatments. But it's not enough. Every day, thousands more people are diagnosed with Alzheimer's and their families receive the devastating news that there is still no cure, no way to prevent the disease in others, or any way to effectively stop the progression of Alzheimer's.

I've joined the Walk to End Alzheimer's Executive and Planning Committees in Washington, D.C. to do what I can to end Alzheimer's once and for all. I appreciate any support you can give.
