Amy's Army was created in 2021 to raise money for the Walk to End Alzheimer's in honor of Amy Shimkus. Amy was diagnosed with Alzheimer's about a year after retiring from her life long work as a nurse. She was a nurse and a caregiver to the core and the team that cared for her on her memory care unit at the Wesley Community in Saratoga Springs, NY called her "Nurse Amy" because she still tried to help everyone else! Outside of her work, she loved to spend time with her sisters, three children, their spouses, her 7 grandchildren and her grand dog RBI "Ribby". She had several stuffed animal RBI look-a-likes keeping her company in her nursing home and her grandson Joel held the first Amy's Animal Army giveaway at a local Nursing home June 11, 2022 where he gave away 50 stuffed animals with names and back stories! Amy passed away March 23, 2022 and we want Amy’s Army to continue to make a great impact this year as she made such a positive impact on anyone she met. In 2022 we walked in 3 Walks and raised almost $17,000! Last year we raised more than $25,000 in 2 walks! We are hoping to do even more this year, but we need your help! Please support our team for the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's®, the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. We will be walking in Reston, VA on September 29th and we'd love for you to join our team!
