My Mom, Amy Shimkus was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease at age 69. She lived with me and my family at the time. We sought treatment through drug therapies, cognitive therapies and we even participated in a drug trial at Georgetown. She told me back then she knew that participating in the trial would likely not help her, but she hoped it helped someone, sometime. My Mom was a nurse. She worked the graveyard shift my entire childhood. She took care of her patients at night and her three kids during the day. At some point she started moonlighting in nursing homes to help with our college bills. She was always thinking of others. On Dec. 26, 2019, we made the tough decision to move her into Memory Care near my brother in NY. She was called "Nurse Amy" by the heroes that cared for her because she "helped” take care of the other residents. She had helped my husband and me raise our 3 kids - she had lived with us for 18 years! She didn't miss a game, meet or concert for all three of my boys. She adored her grand dog RBI - AKA Ribby and missed him so much that she had several stuffed look-a-likes that she cared for at her Nursing Home as if they were real. My Mom passed away March 23, 2022 and now I need to finish what she started - help find a cure and/or treatment! I can't do this without your help! Alzheimer's is a devastating disease for the patient and the family. Please consider supporting me, my Team (Amy's Army) or any one of my teammates with a donation of any amount - OR - sign up to walk with us! We will make sure you have your very own Amy's Army purple camo shirt - and this year - I will work with you to personalize it if you'd like to honor someone!
Thank you!
