Mom was a single mother raising five children. She scrimped and saved to pay for Catholic school education and piano lessons. She attended endless school events and supported all our extracurricular activities, eventually including those of her eight grandchildren. She sewed a bridal gown for one of her daughters, and made all the bridesmaids' dresses for her four daughters' weddings. She became an avid tennis player, winning local, regional, and national tournaments, and winning medals in the Senior Games. Mom volunteered in the Aurora Medical Center Gift Shop for sixteen years. Mom was also a breast cancer survivor.
Several years ago, Mom was unable to remember how to drive to the tennis courts where she had played with her team for many years. Alzheimer's had begun to erase parts of Mom's memory. The disease rapidly progressed. Mom lost her battle in May, 2016. The best way I can think to honor her now, is to raise awareness and money to help find the cure for Alzheimer's.
At the Rosary for Mom, my youngest daughter performed a dance to pay special tribute to Grandma, for supporting her dance career over the years. The words in the Westlife song resonate in me daily, "I'll See You Again...You never really left. I feel you walk beside me...I am so blessed to have had you in my life."
I know Mom will be walking with all of us on September 21st in Denver City Park! Let's go find that cure!
