My dad has Alzheimer's. We want to keep him at home where he is the most comfortable. He rarely talks, but at this time he can still dress himself. Surprisingly he remembers my old dog, Molly's name, but most of the time he doesn't know mine. I often describe his memory as swiss cheese. He often falls into a hole. This disease is hardest on my mom. She is with him 24/7. We do have a caregiver who comes on Friday morning to help him bath, shave and if it is good weather, take him for a walk. It's hard to see such a talented, capable man dissolve away. He has no affect, no memory of what he accomplished or most of time doesn't remember his own family. So many other family members have died of this horrible disease. We need to end this life destroying disease.
