6 years ago I lost my beloved father Hiromi "Tak" Takemoto. He was an amazing Father, Jiichan, Uncle, Brother, Pharmacist, and all-around amazing human being. He was calm, quiet, and kind, with a dry sense of humor, and always willing to help anyone in need.
His progression into Alzheimer's started slow but after a while, his decline accelerated. He was no longer the same man we all loved; it was the most difficult thing I have ever experienced.
The memory that always sticks in my mind was the time I was helping him do something, it was a banal task, putting on shoes or something like that. He looked at me and said, "Thanks, son." At first, it was funny. My first thought was I better put on makeup for my next visit! My mom laughed too and asked him "Do you know who this is?" His response was no. The man who cared for me my entire life didn't recognize me as his daughter, and that was the moment that broke me.
So to honor his memory and the love and appreciation I will always have for him, I walk. I walk to help grow awareness and support for the Alzheimer's Association's effort to eradicate this cruel disease. I walk, because I have a dear Aunt and Uncle who are currently suffering from the disease. I walk, because I dread the moment when my cousins have a similar moment to mine that will break their hearts.
If you can, I would love it if you could donate to support the Alzheimer's Association. Skip Starbucks for 1 day and donate the $6!
Or if you'd like to join me for the San Diego Walk at Liberty Station in October, please join our team!
XOXO, Tiff
