My experience with Alzheimer's started when I was too young to understand what was happening. I just knew that Grandma made silly comments. By the time my mom started showing signs in her mid-60s, I knew what was happening and where it would go. My family watched my mom, who was a social, fun, smart, active woman, lose herself to this soul-stealing disease. She was a person who was motivated to make a difference in the lives of others. How can I sit back and let her memory fade without trying to make sure others don't have to suffer the way she did? It is what she would have done.
My mom and I used to do this walk together after she was diagnosed. She is my motivation to try to bring as much attention to this disease as possible in hopes that others can benefit from the resources that the Alzheimer's Association provided to my family. My true hope is that we have a cure for Alzheimer's and all other dementia at some point in my lifetime so others do not have to suffer.
A disease that was once not talked about is now the third leading cause of death in Orange County. Please join me on this walk so we can try to make a difference together.
