Like many families touched by Alzheimer's and other dementia, I wasn't prepared to address my mother's gradual progression starting in the 1990s. I was still working, and I didn't want to hear her friends telling me that something needed to be done! When I retired in 1999 I could no longer ignore the need to confirm the diagnosis. Diana and I were willing to move her in with us, and we were fortunate that she was cooperative rather than oppositional--and that we could utilize a day care center for much needed respite. She maintained a quality of life for 8 more years before making her transition from this world at age 94.
We are making a difference by supporting the Alzheimer's Association and the Alzheimer's Impact Movement!
