Like many families touched by Alzheimer's and other dementia, I wasn't prepared to address my mother's gradual progression in the 1990s. I was still working and I wasn't ready to hear that something needed to be done! When I retired in 1999 I could no longer ignore the need to confirm her diagnosis. We were fortunate that she was cooperative rather than combative when we brought her to live in our home. We were also lucky to utilize a wonderful day center for much needed respite. She maintained a quality of life for 8 more years before making her transition from this world at age 94. We are making a difference by supporting the Alzheimer's Association and its legislative arm, the Alzheimer's Impact Movement!
