2024 will mark the 30th year of our Santa Cruz/Aptos Walk to End Alzheimer's. I have participate every year. Originally called the Memory Walk, this annual event is incredibly meaningful and inspiring. People with a range of connections to the cause gather to support one another, promote awareness, fund research, and provision of support services.
Through my experiences as a family support group facilitator and public policy advocate, I have met so many (too many) individuals and families dealing with the challenges of Alzheimer's and other conditions that result in dementia. I lived the experience with my dad and mother-in-law, one with Parkinson's Disease and the other with Alzheimer's. I had hoped that 30 years in we would be seeing more effective treatments and modes of prevention. Through research and education to both the public and heath care providers, we are making progress, but so much more is needed. Walk season provides the opportunity to get us closer to the vision of the Alzheimer's Association - a world without Alzheimer's and all other dementia.
I believe that I am playing a part toward this goal, I am grateful to my many friends, family, and colleagues who support this effort.
With heartfelt thanks,
Francie
