My  mother was challenged by vascular dementia for the last 7 years of her life. After my father died, my four siblings and I cared for Mom at home until she peacefully passed away in 2007. Caring for Mom was a profoundly meaningful and sometimes overwhelming experience that touched every part of our lives. We were fortunate to be able to keep Mom comfortably at home until the day she died surrounded by family and caregivers. 

Unlike my Mom, LGBTQ older adults are more likely to be single,  live alone,  and to not have adult children to care for them.  LGBTQ older adults living with dementia will need the support of community resources  to remain in their homes for as long and as well as possible. Yet, LGBTQ older adults are understandably  reluctant  to use dementia care services for fear they and or their loved ones will not be treated with the respect they deserve.  The double stigma of being LGBTQ and living with dementia keeps many from accessing needed services at all. 

 I walk to honor my family's journey. I walk to find a cure. I walk  to support the Alzheimer's Association in providing  LGBTQ welcoming and competent dementia care services and  more inclusive dementia care policy and services for all under-served communities.
