I am getting ready to join the Walk to End Alzheimer's. The money raised by the Alzheimer's Association not only provides funding for support to those with Alzheimer's and their caregivers, but also provides funding for research that will put an end to Alzheimer's Disease.
As a result of this research a blood test has been developed that has 90% accuracy at diagnosing the presence of amyloid plaques in the brain that lead to Alzheimer's. This test is in clinical trials and the results are promising. There are two FDA approved drugs that are now available to treat Alzheimer's. Unfortunately, these are expensive and must be administered by infusion in order to reduce amyloid and slow cognitive decline. I have a friend who is in a clinical trial that is testing a pill that can be taken orally, making treatment more convenient and less expensive.
The amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer's develop years before memory loss occurs. Think of the day that a simple blood test can be added to your yearly wellness exams. If the test is positive, treatment could start immediately.
I am grateful for your generosity and support as I join the Walk to End Alzheimer's on September 28 in honor of Tom. Your donations to the Alzheimer's Association are having a meaningful impact in the fight to end this terrible disease.
Love, Mary
