The search for a cure, let alone an effective treatment, continues. While the recently approved monoclonal antibody treatments (Lecanemab and Aducanumab) have raised hopes, the reality is that they are not a cure or promising preventative measure, carry substantial risks, and are unlikely to be accessible to many folks who might benefit. However, the disappointing results of pharmaceuticals focused on amyloid has created more opportunity for research in other areas, including the role of other potentially harmful proteins (e.g., tau), metabolic dysfunction, infectious agents, and various lifestyle factors.
This is the third consecutive year that North Coast Neuropsychology is a sponsor of the Walk to End Alzheimer's in Humboldt County. North Coast Neuropsychology provides diagnostic assessments that increase the likelihood our patients receive accurate diagnoses and treatment. There are many causes of dementia, and while Alzheimer's is the most common for folks over 65, other causes include cerebrovascular disease, Lewy Body Dementia, and Frontotemporal Dementia, to name just a few. But neuropsychological assessment is just one part of the diagnostic work-up, which also includes neuroimaging, blood analysis, and sometimes neurologic examination and analysis of cerebrospinal fluid. Therefore, research efforts to improve diagnostic accuracy using these and other measures is also important.
Your generous donations will go to the Alzheimer's Association, which funds several areas of research. The Alzheimer's Association also provides valuable resources for patients and families, even in remote rural communities such as Humboldt County. This year, we honor the wonderful patients seen through North Coast Neuropsychology over the past 4 years. We look forward to increasing our capacity for serving the community as we transition into a new facility in Arcata.
