My mother, Beverly Mitchell, was officially diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's 9 years ago when she was 69 years old. I had just moved back into my childhood home after my dad passed away to keep her company. Soon, I found myself becoming her caretaker as Alzheimer's took her ability to cook, clean, and care for herself. Two years ago, I found myself unable to care for all of her needs and keep her safe while working full time. Today, Mother lives in a licensed home setting where she is lovingly cared for 24/7. Sadly, she has changed dramatically from the independent, passionate, and talented person we all knew. She has lost the ability to understand language and to speak. She walks slowly with help and much effort. She no longer recognizes anyone, including me. However, she is content and peaceful.
I'm leading the way to find Alzheimer's first survivor by participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's®. Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease. Please make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
