My experience with Alzheimer's goes back many years. Having lost my grandmother, father-in-law, co-worker in her late 40's, and brother-in-law to Alzheimer's, I was well aware that the impact of this disease reaches far beyond the stricken individual and can be life changing for caregivers. In 2020, my husband and I joined the ranks of caregivers supporting his father who has dementia and lives in a memory care facility close to us in Sedona. Unexpectedly, in early 2022, my mother began to struggle with word-finding, then routine activities like using her cell phone and TV remote, and by the Fall she could no longer differentiate between the two. Her rapid decline was devastating to all of us but what was most difficult was seeing her frustration as the disease progressed. She knew something was wrong. She had been an active, vibrant, social being well into her late 80's but as goes the circle of life, things began to unravel and as one of four children we all stepped in to help pick up the pieces. We called night and day, monitored cameras, and visited when we could but as with my previous experiences, we "lost" our Mom before she passed away in late January.
We must make a cure for Alzheimer's our highest priority -- walking is just the first step! Thank YOU for joining the movement!
