This is my beautiful mother, Kathleen Athey. In the summer of 2013, I first noticed her not remembering something important that we had discussed a few weeks prior, that I knew she should have remembered. Slowly over the next five years her memory was clearly not what it had been before. In 2018 she was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, which later turned into an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. My dad did an amazing job taking care of her 24/7 at their home. And continues doing a great job caring for her at the Memory care unit we moved her into in November of 2021. This disease has affected everyone in our family, as we have watched her slip away. This disease is just plain ugly and very difficult for loved ones to watch.
Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither are we. By This participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®, I’m raising funds and awareness to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association® to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us now more than ever — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
Thank you!
