I'm walking to honor my Mom, Nina, who lived with Alzheimer's for at least 10 years, but lived every one of those years as her sweet, kind self. She never complained about everything she had lost, but instead accepted her condition with grace. That said, I know she would want me to fight hard for a cure, so that others do not have to suffer.
Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 14 million by 2050. In Vermont and New Hampshire alone that includes roughly 40,000 patients and their 80,000 unpaid caregivers--friends and family. Thousands more have already lost someone to the disease. Joining the walk is a positive way to support them all.
One thing I have learned is how much we can do to help ourselves and others in both staving off and coping with Alzheimer's. Another thing I've learned is how much friends matter at every stage of this journey. Please make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
Thank you for joining so many friends in the fight against Alzheimer's!
