We lost so much of him a long time ago, but on Monday, July 6th, 2020 we lost him forever. My grandfather, Abuelo Juan, had Alzheimer's for 20 years and had been in the terminal stages, unable to recognize anyone at all, speak or understand for over 5 years. My father moved back to Puerto Rico to help care for him 6 years ago, but already Abuelo didn't know who he was. He didn't know his other children, or even his amazing wife, my Abuela, who always held hope that he would come back to us. This loss of self, not just body, is what is so heartbreaking about Alzheimer's. In the end, he was in pain but unable to express it. Please help raise money for this cause, and prevent others from losing the ability to know the long cherished faces of their family and friends.
Thank you, every tiny bit adds up. Last year I hiked a trail alone but carrying Alz flags, this year I hope to be at the walk again with the community! Either way, doesn't change the need for research and support for caretakers. Let's keep helping this organization do great things!
This team's name comes from the beautiful song by Ed Sheeran, "Afire Love", about Alzheimer's. Please check out the song on youtube.
