In 2011, my grandmother, Toni Gutierrez, passed away from Alzheimer’s. She was 77 and worked at a local boutique that catered to the stars until the late 90s. She was fierce. She raised 4 of us granddaughters and let me tell you none of us were easy! She came home after a full day’s work and made sure there was a homemade dinner for her family, and she sang while she cooked!
When she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, I did not know how to handle it. I avoided visits, conversations because it was easier for me to pretend this was not happening. I lost precious time with her, and I will regret that for a lifetime.
What I found with the Alzheimer’s Association is a way to be a voice, to let those that have loved ones know that there is support out there. A helpline that is available 24/7, community resource finder, and educational resources. The money that we all raise as a community funds these resources and most importantly the scientific research to one day eliminate this disease.
Thank you, Aubrey
