Hi, my name is Susan Jackson and Alzheimer's and other dementia diseases are at the top of my concerns and priorities. I do not remember a time in my life when I did not know about Alzheimer's as I have always had family members affected by some kind of dementia. My mother's side of the family has been affected the most. It started with my great grandmother who had Alzheimers, diagnosed before I was born. My grandmother developed vascular dementia not too long after her sister was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. About a year after my grandmother died, we noticed symptoms in my mother. My mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's 4 years ago at the age of 72 and is now in Stage 7 of the disease. Watching her progress through this disease is by far the hardest thing I have ever had to endure. My father is her primary caregiver and has sacrificed his health to care for her. Unfortunately, my story is like so many others out there. We do not have enough research or support for this disease. Our caregivers do not have enough support. Our loved ones do not have enough support. And it is just getting worse. My biggest fear in life is that I will develop this disease but I will not let that happen without a fight. So that is why I chose to be an advocate, to fight this disease and fight for the support needed for our loved ones and caregivers.
