When I met my wife's parents for the first time I already knew that she was "The One." I was thrilled to meet the 6'5" Virginian with that would become my father-in-law. I found him to be kind, funny and genuinely curious to know me. I learned of his great love for Hardy Boys books, the Rolling Stones and most importantly, for his wife and daughter. What I didn't know then, was that in just a matter of months, everything about him would change. He lost interest in his passions, his good southern manners diminished, he would repeat the same stories over and over, and being anywhere in public started giving him great anxiety.
One March 24, 2017, my father-in-law, Frank Knight, was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia at the age of 65. Less than two years later, his condition progressed to the point that it became necessary to move him into a memory care facility. When Jenni and I were married in March of 2019, Frank was unable to be there. It wasn't long before he became non-verbal and wheel-chair bound. On August 16th of this year, Frank went on to be with the Lord at just 70 years of age.
My mother-in-law, Ann, has been truly courageous as she has gracefully navigated the challenges of making sure that Frank was properly cared for and adjusting to a new way of life. For me, witnessing her love for her husband, and commitment to the vows they made to each other has been an absolute inspiration.
The best way we know how to show love for my father-in-law and the over 55 million people worldwide living with various dementias, is to take up this cause as our own.
