In 2019 my dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. My sister and I became his primary care givers. I think the worst part for me was watching my dad get lost within the house, and not being able to do things like get dressed. Even with my grandma having Alzheimer's, I never imagined my dad would. My dad use to take us on road trips and he only used a road map, no gps, no mapquest and we never got lost! How could my dad not be able to find his way to the bathroom, or back to the living room? How could the one who taught me how to put my shoes on, forget how to put on his?
My dad was a protector, provider, and teacher. He was a great dad and even greater granddad. When this journey started I was not prepared, but immediately put everything aside and did the best I could. The last two weeks of my dad's life, I will never forget. I watched my strong dad now forget how to suck out of a straw and then forget how to swallow. Before I knew it the person that helped give me life, life ended right before my eyes.
NO ONE should have to go through this. Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us now more than ever — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising. Together, we can end this horrible disease.
