The picture of my mom and dad walking hand-and-hand through the neighborhood (at our alzwalk in 2019) is a reminder of how we need to support and love each other every day. I am so appreciative of those that have supported our cause in previous years, whether it be in-person, visiting my mom at the nursing home, volunteering your time at a facility, or donating monetarily.
As many of you know, my mom Joan has been battling Alzheimers for several years now. It is difficult to describe to people the day to day when asked, but know that she is cared for, visited every day at her nursing home, and still manages to give her “mom smile” every once in a while. Although she doesn’t know who we are, there is still a light that glimmers every so often, and it gives us hope that for just a second she connects with us.
This year is to honor my mother’s side of the family as my grandmother, my mother, and my aunts all battle(d) this horrible disease. I am holding special space, energy, and time in my heart in honoring them today and everyday. I also honor those that have gone through this, or are going through the daily ups and downs of this disease. I talk to so many people each year about their experiences, and my love, care, and support go out wholeheartedly to you.
Per usual each year, I hope that you take the time to find light and joy in the good. Find space to address the tough stuff, but enjoy the day-to-day with each other knowing that the ongoing support and care amongst family and friends far outweighs the difficult moments.
I am hopeful this year to have the alzheimer's walk once again in our neighborhood. The meet date is Sunday, September 24th at 1:00 p.m. at our home. We'd love for our family, friends, and neighbors to join us to walk for a cure.
Currently, more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to over 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease. Please consider making a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association. All donations go directly to the Alzheimer's Association. Thank you.
