My mom was diagnosed around 10-11 years ago with this horrible disease. At the time of her diagnosis she was living in Florida with my father. Knowing it wasn’t easy on my him we decided to bring them back to NY. This would allow more of us to help with her care. Shortly after coming to NY I wound up becoming her full time care giver. It had just become too much on my father to take care of her, his health wasn’t the best causing more strain on him. Unfortunately, it eventually came to the point with taking care of her and working full time it became too much for me to handle as well. Then the hardest decision of my life happened, I had to give it all up, Mom went into a nursing home. I would visit her daily, every time I would visit I could see declining. The bright beautiful smile she always had had left her face, soon it was nothing more than the blank stare. There was no more smiles, no more I love you, nothing but the blank stare it is heartbreaking to watch. After 3-1/2 years in the nursing home the day came when Mom's body couldn’t take it anymore. On October 6, 2019 she finally went home to be with the Lord. She was surrounded by her loving family when she took her last breath. It wasn’t easy, but we all knew it was best for her.
My family and I knew we needed to be more involved and try to make a difference. Eight years ago, one of my daughters said lets walk to honor Nani (that is what they called her). That first year I walked with my husband, children, son-in-law and granddaughter in NYC for my mom, their mother in law, grandmother & great-grandmother. We will be walking for our seventh year in Suffolk county for her, and my husband's Uncle Mike who lost his battle on 6/16/2020. Our team along with too many others we know personally have been effected by this horrible disease. I know this disease has effected many of us, joining together we are making a difference. If you can donate towards the cause it would be appreciated, no amount is too small. OR come and walk with us the more the merrier. Thank you & God Bless
Together, we can end the horrible disease of Alzheimer. Please make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
Did you know currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
Thank you for joining the fight against Alzheimer's!
