My dad Henry is a Korean War Navy Veteran who served aboard the USS Turner DD/DDR 834 in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he traveled across the country working at several different ballistic missile and radar sites. He then worked as an engineer with IBM for over 25 years and loved to travel. In short, my dad has a lot of great memories and stories to tell.
Sadly, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's related dementia about 8 years ago. Over these past few years, all those memories are starting to fade, and his mobility continues to decline. It's sad to watch this horrible disease, ever so slowly, take hold of the people we love.
*** I walk not only to honor my dad Henry, but also for my grandmother Mary and my aunt Eva who both passed away from other types of dementia. I also walk to bring awareness to dementia and to advocate to help find better treatments or better yet, A CURE!

Want to make an even bigger impact? Consider joining the Alzheimer's Impact Movement (AIM). They are the advocacy arm of the Alzheimer's Association, working at the federal and state level asking our Senators and Congressmen to commit to the Association's federal legislative priorities, like increasing research funding at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and strengthening federal programs that serve the Alzheimer's community.
