Dear Friends,
This year I am honoring my very dear friend Cindy. Our friendship started over 40 years ago, and as she often liked to reminded Bernie, she knew me longer than he did! Cindy was my matron of honor at my wedding and Cindy & Dave were travel partners with us for many family vacations. Cindy is a friend that sticks with you through life!
Several years ago Cindy was diagnosed with early onset advanced dementia and as she would say " THIS SUCKS!"
I have often heard the disease described as "the long goodbye" as you lose the person that you cared for in long stages of deterioration . Cindy was a vibrant, outgoing woman who has slowly lost the ability to communicate or care for herself. When I visit Cindy, I am not even sure that she recognizes me anymore but I still see the woman that will forever be my outspoken girlfriend.
This is one of the many reasons that I am, once again, asking my friends and family to contribute to the Alzheimer's Association. My hope is that we can make dementia a disease of the past, so no one has to say a "long goodbye" to someone they love.
