To start fundraising this year, I have to reflect on where I was last year starting our 2022 Walk to End Alzheimer's team. It was September, everyday was an unknown with my grandma's health as her dementia progressed. Planning to walk in her honor gave me a tangible goal that I could reach, with so much else remaining up in the air.
My grandma passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on October 28, 2022. The Alzheimer's walk was the following weekend and we were greeted by the most gorgeous, sunny day.
This year, we proudly walk in honor and in memory of our beloved mother, grandmother and friend, Peggy Prendergast. As weeks turn to months after her passing, I remember fondly the things I miss most: sunny days spent outside, baking scones and treats, watching Wheel of Fortune, holding her hand, the special smile we shared together and of course, hearing her incredible stories.
Dementia is a reality for so many. Our family is lucky to have a wonderful support system. We realize that not everyone is as lucky as we are.
We walk in honor and in memory of the loved ones this disease has affected and whom we have lost: my grandma, Peggy, my grandpa, Alexander, whom we lost 29 years ago, and Kitty, whom we lost in 2021.
