My grandma was diagnosed with Dementia in 2001, and sadly passed away 10 years later. In her last years, she had lost the ability to do everyday tasks like walking, eating, talking or even recognizing her family. Watching my grandma decline over those 10 years and witnessing my family struggle through the disease has a huge impact on me. It is because of this experience that I am so passionate about this disease and how we as employees of UnitedHealthcare can help our members who deal with an Alzheimer's or Dementia diagnosis.
Today, one in every three seniors dies with Alzheimer's or another Dementia and over 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's. Those statistics need to change! I walk because I see the hope that can be brought to families who seek help from the Alzheimer's Association. I walk for my grandma - I know she would be doing the same thing. She would be walking, advocating, supporting, encouraging and educating. I hope you join me (and Grandma McDonough) in fighting for this disease. We could use your help!
