It started with repeating the same story over and over again. Over time my mom who was the most amazing cook and baker would forget to add the salt or leave a tray of bread in the oven. By the time we got my mom to see a doctor she was well into her battle with this disease. The hardest parts are when little glimpses of her former self peak out. This happens most often when we listen to music and her beloved Pavarotti comes on and her face lights up in recognition. Or when I am cooking and she walks by and tells me "You need to add more salt to that," and she is right and it is amazing that somehow she still knows.
Today she doesn't speak much anymore she has gone back to her early days and now only speaks Sicilian. She still remembers to peal a fig before she eats it, and that she loves children but so much of her is already gone.
Mom's fight with Alzheimer's ended on January 6, 2023, but I will continue to raise awareness and support in her memory in the hopes that one day no one else will have to watch their loved ones fade away.
Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease. Please make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
