When people hear the word Alzheimer's they think of "old" people, end of life, nursing homes, etc. No one expects to be given this diagnosis when they are in their 50s, still working, enjoying traveling with their husband, and recently having their children leave the house. Children never expect to hear this diagnosis for their mother when they are in their 20s and just graduating college. Husbands never expect to hear this for their wife when they are in their 50s, about ten years before their retirement.
This was the reality for my wife and our family. Anyone who has met Doreen knows how strong, driven, independent, and social she was. Unfortunately, this disease has made it difficult to maintain these qualities and has brought a lot of unexpected challenges to Doreen and our family. What this disease can't take away is Doreen's love for music, her connection/feelings of security to me, her daughters, and her happiness to be around her friends and family. We walk today as a family to raise money in hopes that less and eventually no people/families have to share the same experience as ours.
