In 2018 my mom, Ida Mae was officially diagnosed with Dementia. Although our family had an idea that she was on this road, it hit pretty hard when it was official. She was slowly not remembering different business's when we would be going somewhere. When did they open that store? Starting getting confused in her conversations. Sadly she was in a pretty bad car accident and this accelerated her symptoms. After her accident she was supposed to come live with my husband and I. We had a room all set up for her. She spent one night with us. For other reasons she ended up back in the hospital the day after she came home. Her symptoms got worse while in the hospital. She was more confused, and it was decided she would need more care and supervision than we could give her at home. She went to live at a fabulous facility. It was so difficult to see her as time went on. The confusion, seeing things that weren't actually there. Stories that were very real to her. She would often talk about something and then look at me with confusion and not be able to remember what she was talking about and say, "that was the disease, right?" She made me promise to never lie to her about what was going on, as she progressed. She spent the better part of two years at this facility. Sadly, she lost her battle June 4, 2020. This was the absolute longest goodbye I have ever had to do. Seeing pieces of one of the strongest women I knew, fall away day after day was awful.
Please help me raise funds for research in hopes there can be a stop to this dreadful disease. If I can help one family not have to deal with the pain of the longest goodbye, then it will be worth it.
Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
