And then this happened.
In March 2022, my darling wife, Barbara was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. We have been monitoring her memory issues since 2018 so the diagnosis is not a surprise. We’re doing well, cherishing each day, and hoping our story helps highlight myths and misconceptions surrounding Alzheimer's and other dementias.
We want to thank the Alzheimer’s Association for its tremendous support. We have hope and believe in science.
Facing and overcoming stigma can be a significant challenge for individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's. If you want to know how Barbara is doing, ask her. She’s fully capable. We’re not embarrassed or ashamed. Don’t isolate her by just asking me. Finally, please understand that sometimes her words and actions are not hers, they are of the disease.
Barbara and I are speaking on behalf of more than 6 million Americans and the 55,000 Kansans with Alzheimer's. It is vital that we continue to create awareness of Alzheimer's and engage our community to help overcome the stigma surrounding Alzheimer's and other dementias by learning the facts about Alzheimer's disease and other dementia (through the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org).
