In 2008 I lost my Grandma Weller to complications due to Dementia. One of the hardest things in life is watching someone you love forget who you are.
We had to watch as she lost track of her life and those of us who were, prior to this insidious disease, an integral part of her life. For my Grandmother, family and home was everything. When she got to the point where she no longer recognized the home that she had been living in for the better part of 30 years as being home; and would no longer sleep in her own bed, we knew it was time to seek professional help.
We had kept her at home for as long as we could, however, it was finally time when we could no longer take care of her and we had to admit her to Hospice. Unfortunately, she did not last long after that and she died peacefully in her sleep.
Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither are we. By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®, I’m raising funds and awareness to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association® to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us now more than ever — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
Thank you!
