The movies don’t depict the true reality of Alzheimer’s. The scenes of a peaceful person vaguely not remembering things, or closing their eyes and drifting away after squeezing their loved ones hand. This is not my experience with Alzheimer’s.
My mother was a smart, kind and giving person. This disease has left her full of anxiety, unable to communicate, the shell of the person she used to be. We visit. We try to smile. We look into her eyes searching for her.
In the month of October people are reminded of how bad this disease is with all the walks and fundraisers. I hope with more research, Alzheimers can be removed from our daily language. I hope to see future without it. I hope I’m not looking at my own future. Thank you to everyone who donates for a cure.
