My mother received her diagnosis of Alzheimer's in 2014. Since then there has been a lot of changes. My husband, son and I have moved back in with her as she started suffering from Sundowners. She is still able to stay at home during the day, so I can still work outside the home. She can no longer drive and that has been the hardest on her and I so feel for her. On my father's side of the family, I have lost one uncle to this horrible disease and another uncle that has it and a third uncle that is starting to show signs of it. Out of 5 boys (there was 8. 5 boys and 3 girls) 3 have the disease. My dad didn't live long enough to know if he would have the disease. I feel very blessed to be able to care for my mother. She took care of me, even as an adult when I broke my leg, she would come over and stay the night as my hubby worked graveyard, now it is my turn to take care of her.
I walk to honor her and honor my uncles. I walk to raise awareness of this disease. I walk to raise money for more research to be done. I walk so that hopefully one day, God willing there will be a cure.
