My grandfather, Jose, was the best man I have ever known. He was extremely giving and helpful to everyone he met, especially those in need. He was my father figure and my favorite person. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease when I was in high school and I was crushed. I felt helpless as I watched him deteriorate, forget my name, and lose the ability to advocate for himself. So, when I was 19 years old, I became his primary caregiver. Although it was extremely heartbreaking I learned to be his voice. Taking care of him has been the greatest gift I have ever been given. I learned so much about life and unconditional love, perhaps more so than some people learn in a lifetime. The career I chose is my way of keeping my grandpa’s memory alive. No one should have to go through what he went through, and that is why I am fighting to make a difference. Unfortunately, we need more funds to make further scientific progress so that one day no one else will have to suffer from this devastating disease.
Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease. Please make a donation to advance the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
