Barb will once again be our inspirational leader as she has each year since we formed our #BowdenStrong team in Tullahoma in 2018!   In addition to our Tullahoma friends, we invited the Bowden's friends from Franklin and Nashville as there will not be a BowdenStrong team in the Nashville ALZ walk in 2021.

The key is that we continue our efforts to raise funds to combat Alzheimer's and find a cure for this dreadful disease.  We've had wonderful team support for the Tullahoma/Lynchburg walk in the past despite so many recent challenges and hope we can count on your support in 2021!

If you are unable to "Walk with US" we hope you'll consider a donation to our team as the Bowden family continues their heroic efforts to fight ALZ!

                 The Bowden Family Story

Tullahoma High School graduates from 1966-71 very likely remember Barby Brandt and Tommy Bowden.  Barb graduated in 1969 and Tommy in 1968.  The longtime school sweethearts married in 1972, and their life's journey together became one wonderful adventure after another.

Tom's career in the Army led them around the world as well as a stop in our nation's capital when he was stationed at the Pentagon.  Col. Bowden retired from the Army in 1997, and he held civilian jobs in both Houston and Jacksonville, FL before moving to Franklin, TN to enjoy their retirement and spend time with their two daughters and their families (see photo).

Their journey took an unfortunate turn when Tom developed early signs of Alzheimer's in 2013.  As the disease progressed, Tom required full-time care at a residential facility that specialized in making life with Alzheimer's the best it could possibly be for Tom and his family.  Tom passed away surrounded by family on October 17, 2018.

One of their daughters, Alex Soffer, was the co-chair for Nashville's 2018 Walk to End Alzheimer's after taking a lead role for the 2017 #BOWDENSTRONG team.  Alex and her family have now moved back to their Brooklyn, NY home where she is continuing the fight as a member of the board of directors for the local Alzheimer’s Association chapter.

The Bowden family has been incredible advocates for enhanced research funding with Tennessee legislators, members of the U.S. Congress as well as with other officials on the local, state and federal level.  They are currently advocating for the passage of the Colonel Thomas G. Bowden Memorial Act in support of services for those living with the disease and their unpaid caregivers.

A group of their THS classmates met in 2018 and decided to form a second #BowdenStrong walk team for the Tullahoma event that year in addition to their very successful Nashville walk team! We were moderately successful with our Tullahoma team in 2018 and raised the bar when that team increased our funds raised in 2019.  We are all painfully aware of the multitude of hardships the virus has caused us, but we remain committed to finding a cure for Alzheimer's, and we desperately need your help more than ever before this year!

We hope you'll join us as we honor Tom's memory and support his family as well as the millions who are impacted by this dreaded disease.  Whether you know the Bowdens or not, we hope you'll agree that supporting the Tullahoma/Lynchburg Walk to End Alzheimer's is incredibly worthy.  Please consider a donation, and if you are comfortable, join us in Lynchburg on September 18 honoring our team.

Below you'll find words from Tom and Barbara's daughter, Elizabeth Paine, for their 2018 Nashville Walk team page.   It's a powerful message and remains very pertinent this year!  Our team hopes you are moved to join us as the #BowdenStrong team works hard to do our share to help find a cure!

Have you ever had the urge to comb your hair with your razor?

What about putting your pants on your arm first?

How about not being sure if you use a knife or fork to eat with, so you take a chance and eat with your knife?

What about not knowing the names of your children or your spouse?

By 2050, 13-16 million Americans aged 65 or older will have Alzheimer's disease.  That is 32 years from now - I want to see my grandchildren grow up.

Right now an estimated 5.4 million Americans have this disease.

Our dad was one of them.

He was 68 when we lost him.

Please join us to fight against this hideous beast.

The Bowden Family :)
