In 2015 my mom’s father simultaneously experienced a stroke, but managed to soldier on for five more years. Grandpa Ken had the temperament of a drill sergeant, but he exemplified hard work and determination, and demonstrated a lifetime of devoted love to my grandma.
Though I was grateful for his presence, the last few years of his life were painful. Each day his dementia worsened and when he died, he was not the Grandpa Ken I had once known.
