It's just about a month until my birthday and as I was thinking about how celebrations have changed during 2020. I likely wont be getting together with many friends or family to celebrate, plus I'm old now and don't really need anything. So I was thinking about how I could commemorate my 35 years of life in a meaningful way.
Before I started working for the Alzheimer's Association I had never know anyone who had been affected by dementia or Alzheimer's. In the year and a half that I have been with the organization I have encountered numerous caregivers, individuals living with the disease and have unfortunately seen first hand what it can do to a close loved one.
I cant imagine what it is like to lose the precious memories you've made during your life; to eventually not know yourself, your children or your spouse. Watching someone lose this a little bit everyday is heart wrenching enough.
Therefore I've decided that I want to dedicate my birthday to those that are facing the challenges of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. For any of you who might have bought me a card, gift or drink to celebrate, please consider making a donation instead or just help in supporting the cause of ending this terrible disease.
