Hi everyone! My name is Maggie Gartner and I am fighting, for the third year in a row, to end Alzheimer's.
My Oma passed away in August 2020 from Alzheimer's and my sorority, Sigma Kappa, participates in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's every year. I am walking to do my part to end Alz for all involved, but more so because my Oma loved to go on walks. Getting to walk to the park with my Oma was incredibly special and one of my favorite things that I will never forget. If you knew Oma, you knew she loved to go on walks with people she loved, so this event is incredibly fitting. When I went through recruitment I still had my Oma to be able to call and I was thrilled to be able to tell her that I chose to be a part of something bigger than myself, that would benefit people who fight like her.
I also walk for Pa, my grandpa. Spending time with those battling Alzheimer's is a beautiful, difficult, and often draining experience. Those who know Pa, know that he can still hold his own in any card game and work twice as hard as most people to make sure his family is happy and healthy. I walk for Pa and for everyone else who wants several more years of card games with their loved ones. It has been an incredibly difficult few months for my grandparents and family who are all fighting for Pa's safety, health, and happiness. I got to spend an hour with Pa a few weeks ago just the two of us and that is time I will never take for granted.
Over the past two years, I have raised around $5,000 for the walk. This year I hope to raise even more for my Oma, Pa, and everyone else battling this disease. I aim to raise $3,000. No one deserves to walk alone so I walk today and EVERY day for Oma and everyone else.
Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's and that number is expected to grow to as many as 14 million by 2050. Our future is at risk unless we can find a way to change the course of this disease.
Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease. Please make a donation to advance the care, support, and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.
Thank you for joining the fight against Alzheimer's! Let's change the world, and let's do it now.
