Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s Disease is an honor, and our family feels so blessed that we have been able to be so involved in Dennis’ care. On the other hand, this crippling disease is so physically, mentally, and spiritually draining.
The last year has been the most devastating time in our lives. Dennis’ early on-set Alzheimer’s Disease progressed significantly; leaving him unable to communicate his needs, perform any activities of daily living, or think rationally. He became extremely paranoid which led to physical behaviors that we were unable to manage at home. He spent 9 months at the VA Medical Center, split between Minneapolis and Des Moines, waiting for placement in a memory care facility that best fitted his needs. Due to COVID, our family was unable to see him during this time, which ate at our hearts. At the end of May, Dennis was finally moved to an all mens unit at The Wellstead of Rogers, a beautiful memory care facility that is only 10 minutes away from his daughters and grandkids!
Although we have already jumped through so many hurdles this last year battling Dennis’s progressing Alzheimer’s Disease, we still have many to go. For this reason, I am asking you to join us in this journey and support our team for the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's®, the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.
Please consider donating, joining Team DENNIS, helping with fundraising, or all of the above!
With much love,
Erin, Emily, Kirstin, Kayla, & Marita
