This is my dad, William Henry (Bill) Miller. For years he sold Ford trucks and cars at a dealership in Cleveland, Ohio and he was really, really good at it. In his soul was a musician and seeker of knowledge. Dad read every single textbook I had in college AND grad school. Even Organic Chemistry. History was his favorite subject but he found great joy in reading about anything.
This made the cruelty of Alzheimers Disease so personal. You see, it took away his ability to read. Not that Dad didn't know what the words meant - he no longer realized that the black marks on the paper WERE words at all. That the black dots were music. It stole the two most important things in his life. And it stole me.
See, I'm an only child. For the last 4 years of his life, he lived with me. He knew he had a daughter and that she had a Renaissance Faire. He just didn't know that daughter was me. He always carried a faire hand card in his pocket and never missed a chance to show it to someone. Every day he'd show me and tell me about his daughter. He would kindly smile and say, "No, you're a very nice nurse but you're not my daughter."
It's been12 years since he physically left us and yet I still weep when I tell his Alzheimer's story. The help I got from the Alsheimer's Association kept me sane.
Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither are we. By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®, I’m raising funds and awareness to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association® to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us now more than ever — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease.
PLEASE donate to The Cooperative Society team and come out to walk on October 9, 2022. It's great fun and you'll have made a dent.
Thank you!
