Hi I am Karly and my family has suffered the effects of dementia.
My first experience was visiting my great grandma in a nursing home and her not knowing any of us. As my grandfather and his siblings began to age, his sister suffered from it as well, and no longer remembered her family.
Last year during Covid, my grandfather started losing his own memory and we began to notice. I believe lack of his normal social life may have sped this up. When we moved he and my grandma home to Indiana from Florida in January he would often ask what the boxes around his house were for. We ended up losing him in April to a blood disease but his memory would often have him questioning why he was in the hospital throughout the various instances we had to admit him due to low blood levels. It is truly heartbreaking to watch one of the smartest people you know, one of your mentors, forget such simple things.
This disease has not only affected my family but it will affect so many more in the future. With the baby boomer generation aging, we really need to make an impact by advocating for those with Alzheimer's and their families as a community, a state, and a country to aid in their assistance. Thank You
