On Sun Sep 11 my husband I will be joining the walk to end of Alzheimers in Glenview, IL.
Since the diagnosis in my family, life has changed. The only comfort I could find early on was research - trying to understand what is happening, why it's happening, and how it could be happening to us. My research led to some aggressive facts about Alzheimers in America, and the crisis that surrounds it.
About 1 in 9 age 65 and older (10.7%) has Alzheimer's.
Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer's are women.
Older Black Americans are about twice as likely to have Alzheimer's or other dementias as other Americans.
Older Hispanics are about one and one-half times as likely to have Alzheimer's or other dementias as other Americans.
By 2050, the number of people age 65 and older with Alzheimer’s may grow to a projected 12.7 million, barring the development of medical breakthroughs to prevent, slow or cure Alzheimer’s disease.
While I myself have donated and have the goal of raising (and exceeding!) a $500 for Alzheimer's research, my biggest goal for this post is to share awareness and to move towards normalizing and de-stigmatizing the disease. It's not something to stay silent about, because it is here. Life isn't over, it's changed. And while it may look different, it is still beautiful.
I'd also like to invite anyone who is in the Chicagoland area on Sun Sep 11 to join my team, The Purple Polkas and walk with us at the Glen for this cause. The team is named after my mother Deb's favorite color, and Michael's late grandfather Bud's favorite music.
I'm walking for my mom and for my late grandmothers, Pearl and Lorraine, who both suffered from various forms of dementia before their deaths in 2002 and 2014.
If you are interested in donating, helping me fundraise for Alzheimer's research or would like to join The Purple Polkas and walk with us, feel free to DM me or register directly thru the link.
Thank you for helping me fight to end Alzheimer's.
