August 29, 2022, marks the one year anniversary of Bernie's passing and his 13 year journey of Alzheimer's disease. As we were living through that period I always told myself that when it was over I would never beg for donations or continue to participate in the fight...I would be done! I had paid my dues! However, there are over 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer's and the fight is far from over...we are not done. Alzheimer's kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. In 2022 Alzheimer's disease will cost US $321 billion and projected to rise to $1 trillion by 2050.
Fortunately, I am blessed with only good memories but still vividly remember the struggles of the hardest days. Only after he passed did I realize what a toll it takes on the caregiver. As his disease progressed he became more docile and seemed happy as he always smiled from ear to ear when anyone entered the room. He loved people. His honesty was childlike and many times embarrassing but now those are the things I miss most. He was not a young man when he left this world but we were robbed of many good years that we could have shared.
How many people can say that Alzheimer's, or some form of dementia, has never touched their families or friends? Research is the only way to bring about a cure/prevention and each day we grow closer to this goal. Wouldn't it be wonderful to give our children and grandchildren the gift of a world free of Alzheimer's and all related dementias. Please help us make that a reality.
Thank you for helping advance Alzheimer's support, care and research.
