Nobody liked a good story more than my stepdad, Bert. He'd tell his favorites over and over and over. And over. And every time, with the same joyful smile and laugh.
Bert Freehof was many things in his 87 years. A husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. A member of the U.S. Navy, a civil engineer, a real estate broker and developer. An advocate for what he believed in, a puzzle enthusiast, a fruit and bagel connoisseur, a loyal New England Patriots fan and Super Bowl-goer, a sushi lover, a bowler, a bonsai hobbyist. A storyteller. He was Papa Bert, and he was kind and caring, hardworking and innovative, and a sweet, loving, happy person.
In January 2022, Papa Bert passed away after years of suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Time and time again, he'd tell a story, searching for the right word, the right thought. And at the end, he'd be searching for any thought at all.
In Papa Bert's honor and loving memory, I'm participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. I'm raising funds and awareness to fight this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association® to provide care and support for families facing Alzheimer's and dementia while accelerating critical research.
Please join me in the fight against Alzheimer's. You can make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising. Together, we can end Alzheimer's disease. Together, we can help people like Papa Bert continue to tell their stories.
Thank you!
