As many of you know, our sweet Mildred “Millie” Cornett struggled with Dementia the last 3 years of her life. When she first came to me and said “I think I am losing my mind” I told her she was fine, I said “we all forget things and go into a room and forget why we went in there”. After several months I took her to the doctor for some basic tests (draw a picture of a clock depicting a certain time, tie your shoes, count from 1-10 then 10-1, what year is it, what is your birthday) she did well on all of them. Fast forward 1 year, my mom couldn’t perform many of those same tests. To watch the women, who taught me how to tie my shoes, count to 10, and tell time, lose her ability to do those things herself was one of the most heartbreaking things I have ever experienced.
Towards the end Mom could hardly speak and would sometimes respond, but all in all, dementia destroyed her quality of life and ability to go on.
Now fast forward 4 years our family is once again experiencing the effects of dementia on several other family members. This is why I reach out to you to join me in raising awareness for this horrible disease that literally destroys and takes away so many lives.
